Mathematics for computer science
Some of the different number types are:
- Natural numbers: The whole numbers used for counting are called natural numbers. The infinite set of natural numbers includes 0 and is written as, N= {0, 1, 2, 3, … }
- Integers: Natural numbers, their negatives and zero are integers. Integers are numbers without a fractional part. A set of integers is written as, Z= {-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3}
- Rational numbers: Any value that can be represented as a fraction or ratio is called a rational number. This set also includes integers because any integer can be written in fractional form. For example, 5 = 5/1. Recurring numbers such as 0.3333… (1/3) are also rational numbers. A set of rational numbers is referred to as, Q.
