The ultrasonic sensor SRF005

  • The ultrasonic range sensor that can detect objects from 3cm to 3m away.
  • The sensor can be used with the PICAXE system to calculate how far away the object is.
  • The sensor is accurate enough to detect a 3cm broom handle at a distance of 2.4m.

SRF005 module PCB

This is a self-assembly component. The instructions on the BOT120 PDF download are clear enough.

The ultrasonic sensor is usually connected to the front centre position (pin C.2) on the Microbot by plugging it into the SRF005 module PCB.

If it is connected to any of the back connections then it must not be plugged into PCB so that it faces the front of the Microbot as this would reverse the electrical connection to the sensor, causing permanent damage.

3-pin connector PCB

The ultrasonic sensor can be mounted facing forward using the SRF005 mounting PCB which comes with the BOT123 servo upgrade pack, using a standard 3 wire cable to connect it to 3-pin connector PCB on one of the back connection points. The SRF005 mounting PCB can then be stuck onto the battery pack with Blu-Tack.

If combined with the servo this upgrade allows the SRF055 to be rotated back and forth. The servo connects to another 3-pin connector PCB on one of the back connection points.

This is a simple debug program for an ultrasonic sensor mounted on the front of the Microbot (pin c.2), storing the distance value in variable A.

The debug screen will display the distance from the sensor in cm.

When combined with an LCD/OLED screen the distance to an object can be constantly displayed as the Microbot moves around.
